Brief History of the Archives

Our archives did not get off to a good start until the Society received a facility. Thanks to the generosity of the Union Pacific Railroad and the Museum of Transportation that facility arrived in the form of a caboose. MP 13546 is an Extended Vision cupola caboose built by the International Car Company in January 1972. It operated across the entire Missouri Pacific system until its retirement in 1988. During the month of March, in that same year, it was moved to the Museum of Transportation which is home to several other pieces of preserved Missouri Pacific rolling stock. After restoration was completed, the MPHS Archives was moved inside the caboose. Through the years, it has moved to various locations on the musuem grounds, but it continues to serve the Society as a home to some of the items in our collection. The bulk of our collection and our work space is located in an office type facility in suburban St. Louis. Please contact the archivist for more information.
